Information Markets for community health

We study whether incentives and market mechanisms can aggregate local observations into useful public health information. A published Ghana pilot examined the feasibility and acceptability of collective intelligence-based COVID-19 surveillance. The broader agenda concerns how to elicit, combine, and evaluate community knowledge.

Overview

We study whether incentives and market mechanisms can aggregate local observations into useful public health information. A published Ghana pilot examined the feasibility and acceptability of collective intelligence-based COVID-19 surveillance. The broader agenda concerns how to elicit, combine, and evaluate community knowledge.

What we are studying

  • Feasibility and acceptability of information-market surveillance mechanisms
  • Methods for eliciting, combining, and evaluating distributed community knowledge
  • Applicability of collective intelligence approaches to public health monitoring

Status

Research program with one published pilot. The Kenya extension has been paused since 13 May 2026. We do not claim outbreak-prediction accuracy, representativeness, or an active Kenya trial.
